The training manager chose a difficult task as the topic of the essay for the qualifying stage of all competition of business trainers to create a portrait of a modern business coach, telling which trainer is needed today to solve the problems of a business organization.
Portrait of a modern business coach. What kind of coach is needed to solve the problems of the organization today
To answer this question, let’s divide the title into three parts: a portrait of a coach, interaction with the organization, and what is “today“.
“Portrait” is a description: a listing of the personal qualities and external attributes of the trainer. But, qualities, in themselves, do not solve the problems of the organization. A trainer is a professional of at least three components – the topic of training, work with a small group, and public speaking.
The psychologist is an experimenter who creates group techniques of work, packs them into fundamental textbooks and understandable methods disappear as a rare species. The low threshold of entry ensured an influx into the profession of both specialists who decided to pass on their experience and random people who are carried away by the image of a “fashion coach” or “guru”. However, in the absence of content, in the age of digital footprints and big data, this type of trainer will begin to wither away, accumulating a plume of negative reviews.
The second part of the question: the objectives of the organization. What is the request from the customer? What organization do you have to work with?
An organization needs “its own” trainer who is able to take into account and combine different factors in its activities: customer needs, organizers’ requests, corporate culture and company values, organizational structure, specialization of activities, the scale of the organization, recent advances in teaching methods.
The business coach must be a politician, a negotiator.
A business Coach is not only a performer, his mission is to be a guide, to educate the customer. The problem statement often destroys the idea of the training: “Everything is great, but we need a more lecture format”. It is a fine art to fulfill professional standards and meet the needs of the client. Master: once – he is able to defend his point of view, and the second time – he treats the customer as a client, knows how to sell him his solution or work out a joint one. Even if he is an “internal” trainer.
In modern practice, training is often a motivational event. Its effectiveness is assessed only in terms of “emotion-attitude”, and not “business-result”. A modern trainer is able to look “For” the training time: assess the effect both from the feedback of the participants and “return to expectations”, to offer schemes for analyzing the effectiveness of the entire training process. He is able to act not only as a “master” but also as a consultant.
The third part of the question is “today”. What is the difference between a business coach, organization, training and their interaction at the beginning of 2018.
The challenge for the modern business coach is not only teaching but also maintaining social cohesion.
Ensuring project work, in an environment of ever-changing teams, flat organization structures, and agile practices like Scrum and Agile. Training and work with the Y-generation: a limited amount of information perception, clip thinking, with built-in knowledge of time management and information retrieval.
Decrease in personal communication in favor of text commands – people literally “leave” for gadgets and do not know how to interact + narrow specialization of an individual. Hence the demand for negotiation, influence, and emotional intelligence.
The business coach’s mission is to keep professionals in communication. Ensure the development of technologies, formalization of the expertise of the group itself from tacit knowledge, using the technologies of team interaction: facilitation, group coaching, etc.
The business coach will turn from a “teacher” into a moderator of group sessions, discussions, simulations. It is capable of handling short formats, integrating learning into daily activities and weekly work cycles. The business coach stabilizes and develops the team in the process of creating a new one.
Business Coaches “on all topics” will leave the stage. A feature of a trainer today will be deep specialization in one area, broad expertise in related areas, but most importantly, exhaustive communicative competence.
In the future: against the background of the development of e-learning tools, packaging of standard courses online and digital, the role of a trainer will continue to transform. He is an inspiring leader, a positive hero, a kind of “bright Other”. An effective “manager” who takes an active position, who can “stand up” for the methodology, but has the inner strength not to use violence in teaching.
He sees a more adequate picture of the world, sees ways and solutions that are not obvious to a specialist. The coach is constantly expanding it. Change the space of options, indicate the possibilities of an alternative solution or a specialist in another field – his task. He is able to suggest a way of action, by example to show an example of the use of technology.
