Carrying out electrical work is a rather complicated and dangerous procedure. Therefore, when performing such work, it is important to have the skills and experience to prevent accidents, violations of work technology, and mistakes that can harm a person.
Training, testing knowledge in the field of electrical safety, and obtaining the appropriate certificate by the employees of the enterprise is a prerequisite for starting work, both for electrical and non-electrical personnel.
Electrical safety personnel categories
The main categories into which the personnel is subdivided for obtaining permission to work with electrical installations are:
1.Electrotechnical;
2.Electrotechnological;
3.Not electrical.
Electrotechnological – the personnel of production units that work on electrical devices (electric ovens, electric welding, electrolysis, and others), which requires constant maintenance and adjustment of equipment, electric drives, hand-held machines, portable and mobile electrical receivers, portable power tools.
Non-electrical workers include workers whose activities are associated with interaction with various household appliances, simple equipment, and office equipment. Such workers are assigned I or II groups for electrical safety.
The operation of electrical installations should be carried out by trained electrical personnel of the enterprise, which is divided into categories:
- administrative and technical;
- repair;
- operational;
- operational and repair.
Administrative and technical
Specialists who organize the process of performing work and supervise the installation, adjustment, maintenance, and operation of equipment.
Repair
Responsible for the maintenance and repair of equipment performs commissioning.
Operational
Workers who inspect and control equipment perform operational switching on, off, switching of various equipment in installations. Responsible for admission to work in the installation.

Personnel who monitor, maintain, and repair equipment that is assigned to this group;
What and how many safety groups exist?
In accordance with PTEEP on electrical safety for personnel interacting and servicing equipment, five qualification groups are assigned.
Group I is established for non-electrical personnel who, in their activities, use a power tool and equipment that does not require special training to work with it. This group is assigned by an employee of the enterprise who has at least group III for safety and above.
Group II is assigned for employees serving devices and working on them. These include the operators of lifting machines, electric welders, as well as other specialists whose work is related to the use and maintenance of portable equipment employed on the territory of the enterprise. Also, this group is established for newly hired personnel.
Group III is established for personnel working in networks with voltages up to 1000 V and over 1000 V. Personnel with this group are allowed to independently service installations and equipment, including its inspection, connection, and disconnection.
Group IV is assigned to a person from among the engineering and technical workers who are responsible for the economy up to 1000 V at the enterprise. Also, this group can be assigned to operational personnel for training newly hired workers or those with little experience.
Group V is established for specialists ( engineers ) responsible in the organization for facilities over 1000 V. They can also supervise the production of work and work on equipment up to 1000 V.
What you need to know about obtaining an electrical safety admission group
Each safety group requires certain knowledge, skills, and experience to work with installations. Therefore, in order to obtain a DL group and admittance to work, it is required to undergo training and obtain admission to work. There is a specific procedure for assigning a safety group to an employee.
Group I, assigned after passing the instructions on the rules for working on electrical equipment and providing first aid for electric shock.
Group II, requires workers to have special knowledge about the device and the principle of operation of electrical equipment, safe work when working with a power tool, as well as the consequences of electric shock and how to provide assistance to victims of this phenomenon.
Group III, is assigned only to electrical workers who have worked from 1 to 3 months at the enterprise. Such an employee must have knowledge in the field of the device and the principle of operation and maintenance of equipment, be able to monitor the progress of work, be able to identify malfunctions, safety violations, and also provide assistance to victims of electric shock.
Group IV, is received by specialists who have worked from 3 to 6 months with a confirmed group III, who has a secondary vocational or higher education. This employee must be able to control and manage the production process, instruct, provide assistance, and also have serious knowledge in the field of maintenance, repair, and operation of installations for various purposes.
Group V, is assigned to a specialist who has worked with Group IV from 3 months to two years, must know the schemes of installations, the rules for using protective equipment and their verification, the rules for operating the equipment. Also, an applicant for this group must be able to organize and manage work on equipment with any voltage, be able to train personnel in labor protection rules, practical methods of providing first aid to injured workers at work, and be able to practically provide it.
How is the assignment of an electrical safety group?
For certification for an electrical safety group, an employee must undergo special training and pass an exam. Certification can be carried out directly at the enterprise, for this, by order of the head, an electrical safety commission is created, which includes from three to five specialists with III and IV admission groups. In this case, the chairman of the commission must have a group IV on safety.
For the assignment of group I, the creation of a commission is not required, a sufficient basis would be an instructing on safety with the entry of data in a special journal. According to the results of the exam, an admission certificate is issued.
